SpaceX rocket launch from Vandenberg planned Friday afternoon

UPDATE: The rocket successfully launched at 12:26 p.m., SpaceX reported. A boom was heard and felt about 10 minutes later in parts of Ventura County as the reusable stage returned.

Original story:

A Falcon 9 rocket is scheduled to launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base at 12:26 p.m. Friday.

The SpaceX launch will send 52 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit, the Hawthorne-headquartered company said.

Launches from the base outside Lompoc are often visible in Ventura County. Loud booms from Falcon 9's reusable first stage sometimes rattle local windows as the stage returns to a drone ship in the Pacific Ocean.

If the 12:26 p.m. launch is scrapped, another window will open at 4:24 p.m. Friday.

If you're unable to peek at the sky, you can watch online starting about 5 minutes before launch at spacex.com via the "Starlink mission" tab.
