MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A southwest Memphis community is shaken to its core after a shootout that left a Memphis Police officer and a suspect dead.

MPD Officer Joseph McKinney was fatally shot after responding to a call on Hewlett Road and Horn Lake Road early Friday morning. One of the suspects, identified as 18-year-old Jaylen Lobley, was also killed.

A short drive down Hewlett Road shows the aftermath of the brutality hours earlier. A grandmother who spoke with WREG has called this community home for more than half a century, but that secure feeling of home was disrupted after peeking out shortly after 2 a.m.

“It’s sad, it’s sad because we have to walk this way to get our kids to school and it’s not safe,” she said.

Marbell Neal was working at the time, but her daughter and grandson were at her home, which sits directly across the street from where the suspects’ car, full of bullet holes, stopped.

“My daughter said she heard a boom,” Neal said. “She looked out the door and she said she saw the car. Someone had shot up the car.”

Neal was unable to make it inside her house as it sat in the middle of one of the crime scenes. The widespread investigation stretched on for hours.

There are still unanswered questions, but neighbors WREG spoke to say what happened here overnight has reshaped the lives of many.
