Southside Park pool won’t be open for start of June

(FOX40.COM) — As Sacramento residents search for places to cool of this summer, those living in the area around Southside Park will have to wait a little longer to use their local community pool.

The pool has been closed for the past two summers as it was in need of repair. A report from the Sacramento Bee said a fiberglass lining was causing swimmers to complain of rashes.

Temperatures to possibly reach 100 degrees in the Sacramento Valley

At a meeting Monday night, Sacramento Superintendent of Recreation Sjon Swanson said that the pool is expected to open this summer but there were still some steps that needed to be taken before that could happen.

Swanson said bids for leak repair and resurfacing work on the pool will soon be presented to the city council and that work is planned to begin in early June.

News about the continued closure came the same day the new operator of the water park at Cal Expo announced it would not open this summer.

Those closures are likely to lead some families to head to local waterways in search of relief from the heat but authorities are warning residents to avoid those options.

This winter saw high levels of snowpack, the melting of which has resulted in rivers and lakes getting colder, deeper, faster and better able to conceal fast-moving debris.

At least two people have drowned in Northern California rivers over the past week, including a mother who died trying to rescue her daughter as she was being swept away by the San Joaquin River.
