Southern University students honored for their dedication to help North Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Many Southern University students are putting in effort to help the North Baton Rouge community. Two students were honored for moving forward with uniting the area by giving them certificates of recognition.

Ryan Jefferson and De’Andre Boutte both serve in the Southern University NAACP chapter. They say their ultimate goal is to help the area come together.

“And we just want to bring the community out, some of our fellow students to get some community service hours and just really bond over a good, good thing for the community,” said Ryan Jefferson, Juvenile Justice chairman for Southern University NAACP Chapter.

The Scotlandville Area Foundation plans to rebuild North Baton Rouge and to rid the area of the many disparities.

Jefferson and Boutte helped the foundation with cleanup efforts, planning events for the area and even attending and speaking at metro council meetings to help the area get more attention from city leaders. They say that after joining NAACP it gave them a new perspective for community involvement.

“Just feel like that was very important for us to see what the community can do and when we all come out and put hands together and that’s very close to my heart,” said Boutte, Juvenile Justice co-chairman for Southern University NAACP Chapter.

They say their chapter has been pushing for better advocacy and even encouraging city officials to help be a part of the betterment of North Baton Rouge.

“North Baton Rouge is a very bustling place, and it just needs some attention. It just needs to be looked after and that’s what we’re here for,” said Jefferson.

After being recognized for their dedication, they say the work isn’t done and will continue to take part in rebuilding and catering to Scotlandville and all areas of North Baton Rouge.

“There’s a lot of work still to be done, we’re just getting started,” said Boutte.
