Southern University Law Center hosts health fair in north Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The Southern University Law Center hosted its first health and harmony wellness fair at the F.G. Clark Activity Center at Southern University on Saturday.

Students, staff and residents came together in north Baton Rouge to learn the importance of taking care of your mental and physical health.

“This is just going along with our mission, making sure that people have access to information and education that they need in order to live better lives,” said Marla Dickerson, Vice Chancellor of Strategic Partnerships at Southern University Law Center.

Many organizations around the city have been answering the call to bring more resources to those in the north Baton Rouge community and to combat the health disparity.

Debra Stampley works with Southeast Community Health Systems in Baton Rouge and said that the organization aims to specifically help those in communities like this.

“We are located in a rural area to assist people in underserved areas. We have transportation, so they are not able to provide their own transportation,” said Stampley. “We can provide transportation for people in the rural areas.”

The law center received a grant from the Louisiana Department of Health to host the event. Many businesses like CVS, Aetna Better Health, and Baton Rouge General were in attendance providing free COVID vaccines and health screenings.

Councilman Darryl Hurst of District 5 said that mental health is another important part of health to take care of and that seeing the availability of the school to help those is a big step forward.

“Allowing us to come here and offer mental health resources through the university makes them aware of what the university offers the community. We feel like we can fight those things right here on the bluff,” said Hurst.

The law center hopes to continue to have events like this for the north Baton Rouge community and to continue to be a part of those who want to keep closing the health disparity gap in the area.

“The mission of Southern University, including the Southern University Law Center, is to really be a partner to the community,” said Dickerson.
