Southern University Law Center event about disparities in health care

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The Southern University Law Center is hosting an event focused on rising maternal mortality rates and disparities in health care coverage.

The conversation titled “Intersectionality between the Caste System and the Medical System” features author Isabel Wilkerson. The event will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, May 20 at SULC.

“As we have conversations surrounding racial bias in healthcare, we must address the historical root, economic impact, health disparities, discrimination, and more,” said Marla Dickerson, SULC vice chancellor of Innovation and Strategic Partnerships and Initiatives. “We are fortunate to host Ms. Wilkerson and uncrate these issues that are not only plaguing Louisiana but the world.”

Fewer US overdose deaths were reported last year, but experts are still cautious

Award-winning writer Wilkerson is the author of the critically acclaimed “New York Times” bestsellers “The Warmth of Other Suns” and “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents,” according to a news release.

The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required to attend.
