Southern Tier police agencies to participate in “Stop DWI”

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies in the Southern Tier are participating in the statewide Stop DWI Campaign.

It starts Friday, May 24 and lasts through Monday, May 27 and aims to bring awareness to impaired driving.

“I think just being aware that law enforcement is going to be out there and actively making sure that people are being responsible and not endangering others who are out on the road. Just, if they have the opportunity, pick alternatives to drinking and driving. Find a designated driver, use an Uber, call a friend or just stay at the place you’re going to or just not drink,” said Chemung County Sheriff Bill Schrom.

The initiative includes checkpoints and added patrols to make sure people aren’t drinking and driving.

“We anticipate a lot of activity. I know the schools have added a couple leftover snow days, so they have a little bit longer weekend. I think there’s going to be a little more celebrating and outdoor activity and picnics and parties and those types of things. So, law enforcement is taking a proactive approach just to be out there, be visible and really take the opportunity to remind people. Be aware of what they’re doing and how they’re doing it and enjoy the weekend. But, drink responsibly and party responsibly and if at all possible, don’t drink and drive,” said Schrom.
