Southern Illinois woman dies after falling out of off-road vehicle

A 25-year-old woman is dead after falling out of an off-road vehicle and onto the road Sunday afternoon.

The Perry County Sheriff’s Department identified the woman as Baylie McClanahan, 25 of Elkville.

According to the sheriff’s department, McClanahan was with a group of people riding side-by-sides on their way back home from the Polish Festival in Du Bois.

McClanahan, who was not wearing a seatbelt, fell to the road pavement when the passenger side door opened, according to the sheriff.

The vehicle was traveling at about 45 mph, the sheriff’s department said. McClanahan was pronounced dead at the scene by the Perry County Coroner’s Office.

A side-by-side is a small vehicle that may resemble a golf cart, but has a larger engine and off-road tires and suspension.

According to her obituary, McClanahan had attended McKendree University, where she was the first female member its bass fishing team. She was engaged to be married and is survived by a young daughter.

Funeral services will be at 3:00 P.M., Sunday, March 10, 2024 at the Elverado High School in Elkville.
