Southern Illinois man dies after being ejected from ATV and then hit by a car

A 34-year-old man died Sunday night after he was ejected from an ATV that collided with a vehicle and then was struck by another vehicle that did not stop.

Daniel W. Montgomery of Bonnie, in rural Jefferson County, was pronounced dead at the scene Sunday night, according to a news release Monday from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators are seeking information from the public in an effort to identify the “dark sedan” that struck Montgomery and left the scene.

Montgomery was driving a Kawasaki ATV west on East Short Street in Bluford at about 8:45 p.m. Sunday when the ATV collided with a 2018 Chevrolet SUV that was going north on North Markham Lane, the news release stated.

Montgomery was ejected from the ATV and landed in the southbound lane of North Markham Lane.

“Seconds later, a third vehicle, described by witnesses as a dark sedan, traveling south on N. Markham Lane, struck Montgomery and continued south out of the area,” according to the news release.
