South Plainfield nitric acid leak sends four to hospital

SOUTH PLAINFIELD – Two police officers and two employees of a trucking company were hospitalized after a substance thought to be nitric acid leaked from a trailer Wednesday evening, police said.

Borough police responded around 6:46 p.m. Wednesday to Jimmy's Trucking at 140 South Ave. on reports of a chemical container leaking and smoking, police said. Arriving officers located a trailer in the rear parking lot which appeared to be leaking an unknown substance, later believed to be nitric acid, police said.

The business was evacuated, and residents of the nearby Celebrations condominium were notified, police said.

In addition to South Plainfield police, the South Plainfield Fire Department and EMS, Middlesex County Hazmat, South Plainfield Office of Emergency Management, New Jersey State Police Hazmat Response Unit and New Jersey State Police Office of Emergency Management responded.

The investigation is continuing.
