South Kitsap High School closed Tuesday after social media threats of potential shooting

SOUTH KITSAP — Classes are canceled at South Kitsap High School Tuesday while the Port Orchard Police investigates social media postings regarding a potential school shooting.

The Port Orchard Police Department on Sunday became aware of postings on social media circulating among students about a potential school shooting to take place on Monday, according to a statement by the department. In response to the threats, officers were present throughout the day to ensure the safety of students and staff, while continuing to investigate the matter, the department said Monday night.

A new series of social media postings began circulating late Monday afternoon. The police department is aware of these new threats and investigators and staff from South Kitsap High School is currently investigating the matter, according to the statement.

Classes were canceled at South Kitsap High School on Tuesday to help the investigation, the South Kitsap School District said in a statement.

"Out of an abundance of caution we’ve made the decision to cancel classes at South Kitsap High School on Tuesday, May 14. This will allow for further investigation into the social media threats we have received about South Kitsap High School," according to the statement from the school district.

"Students should not report to school at SKHS. No other SK schools are canceled," the school district said.
