South Dakota Highway Patrol names Ketterling assistant superintendent, promotes rank

Dec. 24—PIERRE — The South Dakota Highway Patrol has named a 21-year law enforcement veteran as the patrol's newest assistant superintendent.

On Friday, the Department of Public Safety announced Capt. Jason Ketterling had been selected for the position, which oversees the patrol's administrative and special operations.

Ketterling began the new role the same day he was selected, working alongside the patrol's other assistant superintendent, Maj. Jason Husby. Both assistant superintendents are directly overseen by Col. Rick Miller, superintendent of the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

Working primarily in the Badlands and Rapid City districts since he became a trooper in 2000, Ketterling has patrolled nearly 16,000 square miles of land west of the Missouri River, and has served the area in multiple different capacities.

He was promoted to the rank of captain in 2016, and has overseen the Highway Patrol's Sturgis Rally Operations for several years.

"Captain Ketterling has done a great job in each of his prior roles and has worked well with both troopers and the public," Miller said. "With all of the experience he has gained, I am confident Jason will do an excellent job in his new assignment."

With the new position also comes a promotion of rank. Ketterling will be promoted to major during a pinning ceremony to be held at a later date.
