‘South Carolina’s Weatherman’ is back. Here’s when Jim Gandy returns to TV

For a limited time only, see “South Carolina’s Weatherman” Jim Gandy back on air.

The longtime Columbia weatherman announced he would return to WLTX for a temporary assignment while another person is on family leave.

Gandy, who retired in 2019, shared the news Wednesday on social media.

“I will be returning to the air beginning today for the 5,6,7 & 11 weather. This is a temporary assignment, but I don’t have an end date yet,” he wrote. “I will be filling in while one of the staff is on family leave. You may see me in Gandy’s Garden as well. Lots to do. #WLTX

Gandy spent more than a quarter century predicting the weather in the Midlands before retiring. He’s best known for being the only meteorologist to predict that 1989’s Hurricane Hugo would hit Charleston. His forecast is credited for saving lives.

He worked at WIS from 1984 to 1999 before joining WLTX, where he stayed for 20 years. Gandy went to the White House in 2014 to interview then-President Barack Obama on climate change, and is a former Free Times “best weatherman” winner.
