South Carolina football fans buy sky banner to troll Clemson and Tennessee at Orange Bowl

South Carolina football fans are out in full force at the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida, but the Gamecocks made sure their presence was also felt a few hours south at the Orange Bowl in Miami.

Just hours after South Carolina (8-4) plays Notre Dame (8-4) on Friday (3:40 p.m., SEC Network), two of its rivals, Tennessee and Clemson, will face off in the Orange Bowl (8 p.m., ESPN) — a game neither team wanted to be in. Both the Vols and the Tigers had late-season hopes of making the College Football Playoff, but those dreams were crushed when both were upset in the final two weeks of the season by the Gamecocks.

Emboldened by the stunning upsets, a South Carolina fan created a campaign on crowdfunding website Spotfund to purchase a sky banner to fly over the Orange Bowl and troll the participating teams.

"The University of South Carolina kept the University of Tennessee and Clemson out of the college football playoffs. Now, it's our time to show our appreciation," wrote Charles Snyder, the campaign's organizer, on the site.

Thanks to 55 donors, the campaign raised $2,061 — just over its goal of $2,055. The sky banner was spotted flying above Hard Rock Stadium on Friday, bearing the message "Enjoy your bowl game — Gamecocks."

The Gamecocks ended up in the Gator Bowl for the first time since 1987 largely thanks to their upsets of Tennessee and Clemson. Their 63-38 win over the Vols came one week after the team was blown out on the road against Florida and was headlined by a career-best performance from quarterback Spencer Rattler.

South Carolina's 31-30 win over Clemson snapped a seven-year losing streak in the rivalry series and ended the Tigers' 40-game home win streak. After those victories, the Gamecocks earned their highest ranking from the College Football Playoff in program history at No. 19.
