CHICAGO — Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson plans to ask city council for an additional $70 million to provide food and housing for migrants expected to arrive in Chicago this year.

Sources confirm to WGN News the mayor’s office is meeting with members of the city council to discuss the plan and find out how open they would be to approving the funding.

Work permits grow, but undocumented immigrants are left hungry for access

Earlier this year, after Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle committed money toward the estimated $321 million needed, Johnson said he never committed to asking the council for $70 million.

The mayor is now reportedly having a change of heart.
