NBPA memo: Agency employee terminated after unauthorized use of player's credit card
After a National Basketball Players Association probe into the unauthorized use of a player’s personal credit card, an employee at a prominent player representation agency, Christian Dawkins of ASM Sports, was terminated, league sources told The Vertical.
In the summary of an NBPA investigation that circulated through a memo to the union’s membership on Thursday afternoon, Dawkins was discovered to have used an Uber account connected to the personal credit card of an unidentified NBA player between July 2015 and May 2016, running up approximately $42,000 in charges.
The player had not been a client of ASM Sports, and Dawkins was terminated as a result of the union probe. Dawkins had been employed elsewhere upon starting to use the unauthorized account before starting at ASM. The union exonerated ASM Sports in the findings, saying in a memo distributed to NBPA membership that the investigation “uncovered no evidence that any ASM employee knew about Mr. Dawkins’ conduct until after it was discovered in May 2016.”
The union probe detailed Dawkins’ use of the NBA player’s Uber account 1,865 times and “all but a small number of these charges were made without the player’s permission.”
The report says that the player was reimbursed at the close to the investigation.
