Sound Check on 9: System A

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – This week Sound Check on 9 featured a long-time El Paso DJ and beat maker System A who has seen the scene grow in the Borderland over the years.

System A has been DJing and making beats since the early 2000s but found his passion for music at a much earlier age.

“Vinyl has always been in my family. My mom and dad were vinyl heads, and my uncle kind of put this world of sound in my head and ever since then I was on a mission to get a turntable. I was like 12 or 13,” he said.

Hip hop is his “first love,” as he said, so he incorporates plenty of its sound in his beats that also expand into drum and bass, house, reggae, and more different sounds that he played in the special jam session for Sound Check on 9 at Bella Luna Studio.

He also tends to sprinkle some film or TV show quotes in his mixes that he said “make him smile.”

“I think it exploded since back then,” he said about beat-making.

“It seems like a lot of people make beats now and it’s definitely easier these days as well.”

Recently, System A has been focusing mostly on putting out more releases.

He is currently working with local artist Tony Mundo and releasing a single with another local artist.

He will be performing at the La Parada festival that starts in the summer.

“Create, create, create. And there’s no bad beat. Everything is just a learning process. You got to make the bad beats to get to the good beats. So don’t get discouraged,” he said as words of encouragement to the aspiring and upcoming musicians.
