Sound Check on 9: The Carlos Barba Trio

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Sound Check on 9 featured a jazz trio named Carlos Barba that has been jamming to preserve the legacy of jazz music in the Borderland.

Carlos Barba is a keyboardist who’s been playing for the past 15 years.

He started collaborating with the drummer Lawrence Brown about ten years ago and recently included the bassist Efra Ponce in his trio.

Barba is the artistic director of El Paso Jazz Youth Ensemble, a non-profit music education organization teaching jazz music to middle and high school students.

“One of our goals is to keep this music alive through our US playing and teaching it to the younger generations. Because I’ve found that many young people don’t know about jazz, they can fall in love with it once they start playing and listening,” said Barba.

The trio often plays at International Bar in Downtown El Paso on Thursdays, and they are getting ready to perform at the International Jazz Festival at the end of April. Barba said they will make an official announcement soon.

“Jazz means freedom, and jazz means American folk music. American classical music, to a certain extent, I would argue,” said Brown.

You can follow Carlos Barba for all the upcoming performances on Instagram.
