As an American living in the UK, I don't mind admitting that the British accent in all its forms (even the unintelligible ones) is way, way cooler than the American one. However, science says that after the age of 12, length of residence has virtually no effect on accent (Noooooooo!).

So that friend who claims to have picked up an accent while studying abroad for six months? Yeah, not a thing.
