Good news for anyone who fancies a day trip to New York: it might be possible by the early 2020s.

At the end of last year, New York Magazine reported that US-based aerospace start-up Boom planed to have a high-speed supersonic plane that could get you from New York to London in just three hours and 15 minutes by 2023. But now the New York Post has announced the company had received all the funding they need to make a prototype - all £26 million of it - and it could be carrying passengers by 2020.

In three hours and 15 minutes you can barely watch six episodes of Sex and the City. It's brilliant. Pop a sleeping pill to make the flight more bearable and you'll still be half-asleep while trying to get through customs and immigration at JFK.

And even better, the prices aren't thought to be that unaffordable. The NY Post reports they'll be approximately the same cost as flying business class in any major airline, but Boom's Chief Executive Blake Scholl has confirmed they plan to sell more affordable, budget tickets in the long run. "That’s where we’re headed over time," he said.

This super speedy flight will be the result of a new partnership between Boom and Virgin Galactic's Richard Branson, and the a passenger plane that can fly at the speed of sound and cut travel times almost in half is expected to cost around $200 million (£) to build.

But it seems Boom isn't the only company planning to revolutionise air travel. Companies like Boeing and Lockheed Martin are developing supersonic jets while aerospace start-ups Aerion and Spike are working to build high-speed business jets.

Schol told New York:

“We’re getting better computers, getting better phones, and yet we’re still flying, basically, these 1960s airplane designs. We’ve made planes safer. We’ve made them more efficient. But we haven’t made it any easier to get around the planet.”

So as you wait for the day when you can fly across the world in the time it takes to go on an above average Tinder date, start thinking of all the places you could plan a weekend girls trip in a couple of years' time. Tokyo? Sydney? The sky is literally the limit.
