Song Premiere: The O'Jays deliver classic soul on soundtrack tune 'Buddy's Business'

Soul greats the O’Jays are featured on the forthcoming soundtrack to the movie Brawl In Cell Block 99 –a story starring Vince Vaughn who finds himself incarcerated after a drug deal goes wrong.

Yahoo Music is excited to premiere the O’Jays’ “Buddy’s Business,” which is one of seven new songs on the soundtrack that pay homage to classic soul. This particular track was written by director S. Craig Zahler along with co-composer Jeff Herriot.

Zahler says of the project: “I chose to compose soul songs for the film because no other type of music can rival the great works of soul in terms of spirit and emotive expressiveness. I saw the Spinners when they still had Bobby Smith, the Dells with the incomparable Marvin Junior still fronting them, the Sylistics, the Dramatics, the Delfonics, the Chi-Lites, the Isley Brothers, the immortal Bobby Womack, and (on multiple occasions) Tavares and the O’Jays. Styling these original soundtrack songs in the fashion of those written in the seventies was not just because I relish the heart and lush instrumentation of that era, but also because the lead character does not quite belong in a soft and synthetic modern day world.”

Lakeshore Records will release Brawl In Cell Block 99—-Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on October 13.
