Somerville school superintendent Timothy Teehan is retiring

SOMERVILLE - The borough Board of Education has accepted the retirement of Superintendent of Schools Timothy Teehan effective at the end of the school year on June 30.

The board voted to accept Teehan's resignation after an executive session on Dec. 20.

Outgoing Board President William Kimmick said the community should understand that he feels "a debt of gratitude" to Teehan for performing the "incredibly difficult job" of superintendent.

Kimmick also noted that Teehan was superintendent during the "unprecedented" pandemic that forced unforeseen changes to district operations.

Board Vice President Derek Jess said that Teehan was always a "stalwart" for the students and "made sure they had everything they needed."

Teehan was praised for his dedication to students, especially during the "challenging" times brought by the pandemic, Board Member Lucien Sergile said.

In 2017, Teehan replaced Timothy Purnell who resigned to take a job as executive director of the American Montessori Society in New York City. Purnell is now executive director of the New Jersey School Boards Association.

Teehan joined the Somerville School District as academic achievement officer in October 2012.
