Water is back on: Somerset Borough crew finishes replacing failed valve along main line

A failed older 6-inch valve coming off of the 12-inch main water line along East Main Street leading back to Walnut Street has been fixed.

That section of the water main from Somerset Borough's substation just below Sheetz on East Main Street to Highland Park was reopened by 1 p.m. Tuesday. It had been shut beginning at 5 a.m., according to Roger Bailey, administrative assistant to borough Manager Michele Enos. Residents and businesses along that street that did not have water during the repair are now up and flowing, Bailey said.

The shutdown of that part of the water main also affected North Center Avenue from just above Wendy's Restaurant in the borough to Walmart in Somerset Township, Bailey said.

When the borough's public works crew went to fix a water leak at Walnut Street they found that the nut connecting the valve to the main line that was part of the older infrastructure that is not being replaced was "rounded" and had to be replaced.

When a nut is rounded, a worker cannot get a wrench around it to remove it. In this case, the valve itself needs to be replaced.

According to Bailey, the water main line replacement ends where the valve is located, and the borough had planned to replace that valve, just not initially at this time.
