Somerset Berkley Athletics Hall of Fame member George Snyder dies at age 95

SOMERSET – George Snyder, one of Greater Fall River's all-time top high school athletes, died on Thursday. The Somerset Berkley Regional High School Athletics Hall of Fame member was 95.

A decade ago, Snyder was selected by The Herald News as the area's 16th best high school athlete ever, males and females combined.

A captain and quarterback of Somerset High School's undefeated 1947 football team, Snyder was an All-Bristol County League quarterback in his junior and senior seasons where he guided his team to a combined 17-0-1 record.

In basketball, he was the key player and leading scorer for Somerset's 1948 Tech Tourney Class C champions.

A three-sport star at Somerset and an All-Narry League player in all three, Snyder’s best sport was baseball as he led the Raiders to the state title game at Fenway Park. After graduation, he was signed by the New York Yankees. He was making his way up the Yankees minor league chain when his career was interrupted by the Korean War.

“He was a good athlete, a natural athlete. Two feet on the ground. Not egotistical. A great guy,” said Alex Roscoe, Snyder teammate and fellow SBR Hall of Famer, in our Best Athletes story in our 2015.

'Do it for Coach': With heavy hearts, Somerset Berkley hockey advances to Final 4

Snyder was married to the late Marie Snyder, a physical education/coach at the old Sacred Hearts Academy, a former director of health and physical education for Fall River Public Schools, and a pioneer in female athletics in this area.

Snyder's son, Kevin Snyder, is head coach of the Somerset Berkley Regional ice hockey team which, on Thursday evening, won a playoff hockey game to advance to the state Final 4. Multiple players interviewed post game said that they are playing for George Snyder and for their head coach, who was behind the bench.
