Somebody please get Joey Votto a pair of sunglasses

It’s a little known fact that sun often shines in Cincinnati on game days. Given the town’s recent sports history, that’s not exactly something you’d come to expect.

But there it is, up in the sky and everything, creating another occupational hazard for professional athletes trying to notch a victory during daylight hours.

And that pesky sun just happened to get in the way of Reds star Joey Votto while trying to make a routine catch on a pop-up. The first baseman went to flip down his shades before making the catch except there was one tiny problem: Votto wasn’t wearing any.

The resulting muscle-memory induced hilarity is another instance of peak Votto.

It’s not just the flip down that’s so spectatular here. It’s that Votto then flips his imaginary frames back up again.

Look, there aren’t many reasons to watch the Reds this season. The team is last in the National League Central at 16-31 and arguably their biggest move this year has been acquiring Matt Harvey after he imploded in New York. It’s rough out there at Great American Ball Park. The exception to all of that is Votto, who’s not only having a fine year at the plate (.278/.404/.426), but is consistently one of the most entertaining players on and off the field.

Whether it’s his desire to make the MLB season longer, his trolling of St. Louis Uber drivers or his candid comments on Cincinnati’s start to the season, Votto’s personality precedes him in the best of ways.
