It’s softball season on the MS Coast. Here are the top players to watch on the diamond

The girls are back on the diamond as spring fast approaches on the Mississippi Coast.

The region has regularly churned out collegiate talent and 2024 will be no different with a dearth of next-level athletes around the area.

The Coast will once again have multiple teams vying for a state title and we’ll highlight some of the players leading those programs.

Here are some of the best softball players in South Mississippi this season:

  • Teegan DeWitt, Hancock: DeWitt has eclipsed 400 career strikeouts from the circle in a little over two seasons of varsity softball. The junior is one of the top strikeout artists in the state and her presence as a power bat at the plate continues to grow, as well.

  • Caroline Batson, Stone: The senior Mississippi Gulf Coast C.C. commit is coming off a season in which she hit .500 from the plate and struck out 108 from the circle.

  • Gracie McDonald, Ocean Springs: McDonald is a South Alabama commit who dominated at the dish last year with a .522/.693/.817 slash and 42 runs on 51 hits.

  • Peyton Collins, George County: Collins may be the top freshman pitcher in the state after helping lead the Rebels to a 5A title a year ago with 186 strikeouts and an eye-popping 1.89 ERA as an eighth grader.

  • Brooklyn Rhodes, Vancleave: Rhodes is a two-way star signed with the Mississippi College for Women who is coming off a season in which she worked a 3.08 ERA with 190 strikeouts and is nearing her 100th career hit from the plate.

  • Breyona Tanner, East Central: Tanner is a multi-talented junior that fashioned a 2.91 ERA as a sophomore while also hitting .398 from the plate with 35 RBIs.

  • Haley Hughes, Gulfport: The Northwest Florida State commit pitched a 2.45 ERA last year while racking up 41 hits with 18 RBIs.

  • Abbie Hancock, West Harrison: The senior infielder batted .477 a season ago with 41 hits and 30 runs scored.

  • Brooklyn Mitchell, St. Patrick: The Mississippi Gulf Coast C.C. signee and infielder is coming off a .405 batting season where she drove in 35 runs on 32 hits.

  • Cailey Pervel, Pearl River Central: Pervel is a Pearl River C.C. commit who notched six home runs last season while batting .400 with 34 RBIs.
