SoCal students headed to Scripps National Spelling Bee

Are you smarter than a sixth grader?

Two students from San Bernardino County are headed to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Sixth grader Shrey Parikh and eighth grader Srikanth Satheesh Kumar were crowned champions at this year’s San Bernardino County spelling bee.

Their winning words? Rarefaction and recrudescent, respectively.

The students from Etiwanda School District beat out their peers from several other school districts across the county.

Meanwhile, in Orange County, Katelyn Nguyen from Stacey Middle School is heading to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, after winning the Orange County Spelling Bee.

The 7th Grade is the first student in the history of Westminster School District to make it to the National Spelling Bee.

The final word she had to spell to make it to the national stage? Discretionary.

The champions will prepare to compete on the national stage. The competition begins May 28th.
