Snuffer and Smith to return to Raleigh School Board

May 15—Rick Snuffer won reelection to the Raleigh County School Board and was joined by a former board member, Marsha K. Smith.

Snuffer received 7,960 votes while Smith got 7,194 votes, well ahead of a third candidate, Brad "Bird" Deflumeri, who received 2,603 votes.

Snuffer, a lifelong resident of the county who graduated from Trap Hill High School in 1973, ran up 14 consecutive years on the board prior to 2016 when he resigned to care for his aging parents and to attend to requirements of his job with the Department of Agriculture. After taking a break for three and a half years and with the passing of his parents and his retirement from his job, he won election in 2020.

After graduating from West Virginia University, he taught Vo-Ag in Fayette County with classes in landscaping and horticulture for two years.

Smith previously lost four races for the board.

She was defeated in the primary election on May 13, 2014, in a special election on Nov. 4, 2014, in the primary election in May of 2016 and in the May 2020 primary.

Smith was appointed to the Raleigh County Board of Education in August 2016 and served until her defeat at the polls four years later.

She retired in 2014 from Raleigh County Schools after 33 years of service. She spent 27 years of her career at Trap Hill Middle School, where she served as teacher, assistant principal and principal.

She also was the principal of Park Middle School for three years and retired as principal of Woodrow Wilson High School.
