Snow in spring: How often does Tennessee experience a springtime snowfall?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Spring starts Tuesday at 10:06 p.m. After a couple of cold mornings this week, worry may strike about conditions for the upcoming growing season.

Snow isn’t likely in Middle Tennessee during spring, but it has happened before.

The last time there was a significant amount of snowfall in Nashville during spring was March 19 and March 20 in 1996. Over three inches of snow accumulated. This year, snow chances seem slim but it’s not impossible.

March can bring everything from snow to tornadoes

From March 26 to April 1, colder air is expected to move into Middle Tennessee. Ryan Husted, the Warning Coordination Meteorologist at Nashville National Weather Service, said freezing temperatures could happen but that doesn’t always mean snow.

In 2023, each day of April had above-average highs. The average high for the month was 72.6 degrees. In years past, the average high in April was 60.6 degrees.

The Nashville National Weather Service sent a message out earlier that they will be starting the frost/freeze program a couple of weeks early this year. That means freeze warnings and watches could be issued sooner than usual. Usually, these watches and warnings aren’t issued until the middle of April, according to Husted.
