Mountain snow, seen behind patrol vehicles at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's station in the Santa Clarita Valley, closed the Grapevine on Wednesday, March 1, 2023.

UPDATE: The Grapevine had reopened in both directions as of about 4 p.m. Wednesday, Caltrans officials said in a tweet.

Original story:

Travel over the Grapevine was disrupted again by snow Wednesday as a cold storm system impacted the region.

Interstate 5 was closed in both directions north of the Castaic area, the California Highway Patrol and Caltrans reported.

As of about 3 p.m., there was no estimated time to reopen the freeway. You can check the status of a state highway by putting its number into the Caltrans road information site at roads.dot.ca.gov.

National Weather Service forecasters said snow levels Wednesday afternoon were as low as 1,000 to 1,500 feet.

The corridor over Tejon Pass connects travelers from Highway 126 in Ventura County and those headed north from Los Angeles County to the Central Valley and beyond.

The route was also shut at times last week when a stronger cold system brought rain, snow, hail and graupel to Southern California from Thursday to Sunday, with the Grapevine reopened Sunday afternoon.

In Ventura County, bouts of heavy rain, strong winds and reports of hail were in play overnight Tuesday and Wednesday.
