What is SNAP Employment and Training?

GHENT, WV (WVNS) — If you are a recipient of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, an opportunity to gain better employment may be available to you.

DoHS recognized for SNAP Employment and Training program

A program called SNAP Employment & Training (SNAP E&T) is a program for eligible SNAP participants to learn skills that can lead to higher paying jobs, educational opportunities, and better job placement. This program also offers services such as assessment, employment and training activities, and wraparound supportive services.

If you are 18 or older and receive SNAP, you are eligible to participate in this program. Participants should also be prepared to enter the workforce after completing this program. If you are also an individual who is eligible to receive SNAP benefits, this program can help achieve you to achieve your goals to fix your current situation and to become more self sufficient.

In most cases, education and training can be setback for employment. The Bureau for Family Assistance (BFA) offers a network that can provide training at no cost. Each participant of the SNAP E&T program will also have a case manager with them every step of the way to help them achieve their goals upon entering into the workforce.

SNAP E&T can help with the following:

  • Adult Basic Education and GED, English language skills

  • Flexible case management services

  • Resume writing, dress for the workforce, job readiness

  • Financial literacy

  • Support services such as, Transportation assistance and necessary items for training

  • Funding opportunities such as Workforce Investment Opportunity Act (WIOA)

  • Placing participants in apprenticeship and trade programs, such as CDL, nursing and dental programing, heating and cooling, plumbing, construction plus more.

  • On the job training and working with our third-party partners Goodwill of Kanawha Valley, Coalfield Development, West Virginia Women Work, Blenko Glass Company.

  • Opportunities for placement in paid employment

  • Referrals to partner agencies such as Jobs & Hope WV, Division of Rehabilitation Services, Family Support Centers

Individuals who want to participate in this program should contact their local county Department of Human Services (DoHS) office, or DoHS Customer Service at 1-877-716-1212. When calling, ask to be referred to SNAP E&T. Once the case manager receives the referral, you will be scheduled for program orientation, followed by a letter in the mail.
