WATCH: Explosions burst from downtown Davenport manholes

UPDATE: About 4:21 p.m. Tuesday, Davenport Fire crews responded to an underground utility vault fire in the area of 3rd and Harrison streets, according to a news release.

Crews continue to work in conjunction with MidAmerican Energy. The greater downtown Davenport area is impacted by a power outage that is expected to last several hours.

Harrison Street is closed from 4th to 2nd streets and 3rd Street is closed from Ripley to Main Street, while crews respond.

Traffic control devices downtown are out. “Please remember to treat all intersections without traffic signals as 4-way stops,” the release says.

More information will be released as it becomes available.

EARLIER UPDATE: Shortly after 6 p.m., 234 Iowa and Illinois Quad-City customers were still without power. The restaurant Me & Billy, 200 W. 3rd St., Davenport, reported a power outage.


Smoke and flames are pouring from manhole covers in downtown Davenport, where at least one apartment building was being evacuated at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Our Quad Cities News crews saw explosions burst from manholes in the area of Harrison Street and 3rd and 4th streets in downtown Davenport. Several firefighters and police officers are in the area, and traffic is restricted in some places downtown.

MidAmerican Eenrgy also is on the scene. More than 5,600 MidAmerican customers are without power in the downtown area. Officials told Our Quad Cities News crews that there is a cable fire underground.
