TYLER, Texas (KETK) – Smith County Emergency Services District 2 Board of Commissioners approved building a fire station to serve Jamestown and other surrounding areas in Smith County on Monday.

“I’ve never seen one in the 74 years I’ve been around here,” Charles Wilson, with the board of commissioners, said.

Several community members spoke on why the area needs a fire station, including Lisa Hamman who has been advocating for years.

“I’m just very concerned over response times in our area,” Hamman said.

The land where the fire station will be located has already been purchased on FM 1805 across from an old Jamestown store.

“It was just an ignored territory of the county,” Hamman said.

After hearing people address the issue, board members held an open discussion on whether building a new fire station is a good idea. Some people wanted to delay the project to consider if other areas needed resources sooner.

“I want to make sure we’re making decisions on behalf of ESD2,” Brent Dominy, with the board of commissioners, said.

The board voted to pass the motion soon after, giving people who live near the area a sense of relief.

“It’s a good feeling knowing that they voted to do it,” Hamman said.

Once the fire station is built, the area will have paid firefighters on standby.

“If you save one house and one life, it’s worth having it there,” Wilson said.

There is still no timetable yet on when we could see construction start or how much it’s going to cost.

Wilson told KETK, more answers will be given during the next board meeting on April 22/
