24 hours before Gareth Pugh’s show was the grand opening of anarchic opera, Eliogabalo, in Paris. Why is this relevant? Well, Gareth Pugh, the king of unwearable yet still lust-worthy pieces, had designed over sixty costumes and used their themes of greed, wealth and the sun for his SS17 collection. Here’s everything you need to know on Pugh’s latest walking sculptures.

The Designer: Just like most of the fashion industry’s top designers, Gareth Pugh studied at the acclaimed Central Saint Martins. His London Fashion Week debut came in 2005 but he would later show in Paris. Luckily for us, Pugh returned to London in 2015 to mark his tenth anniversary and has stayed ever since. Known for a mix of huge silhouettes and 3D designs along with innovative tailoring, Pugh has collaborated with the likes of Lady Gaga and Rihanna and remains one of London’s top creative talent.

The Collection: The show opened with a black sun headpiece - a motif that would continue throughout - and began to merge gloriously gold designs that turned out to be mosaics on closer inspection. Then came optical illusions that powerfully made their way down the runway. Punches of purple (and the only wearable looks) also appeared, having been inspired by previous popes’ religious garments. Speaking of the recurring sun theme, Pugh explained its meaning as “a symbol of creation and warmth [but also] tyrannical power and destruction. I wanted to explore that duality.”

Make-up was dark and smudged [Photo: Instagram/theurbanbeauty]

The Beauty: Longtime collaborator Val Garland created the tar-black look, smudging the inky pout well beyond the lip line. Hair was messy and primarily black with the odd gold piece thrown in.

The Stomper: Black platform boots with a seriously high heel dominated the collection - some draped in purple ribbons.
