Small turnout for public hearing on Beckley Water rate increase

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – A public hearing was held at Tamarack Marketplace on Friday morning.

Community members were invited to attend the hearing and vocalize any concerns they may have about a rate increase by Beckley Water Company. One of the only two community members to attend, was Joshua Tabor.

Tabor has been resident since 2003, and has faced his own issues with the water company.

“It’s not okay, we pay a 70 dollar bill, soon a 79-ish dollar water bill. I just don’t think that’s okay,” said Tabor.

Tabor wishes to see changes within the company before they increase the rates he and his fellow residents will be forced to pay.

The increased charges and rates requested by Beckley water would bring in around a $4.4 million dollars annually. That is a 30.91% increase.

Tabor adds that the $9.25 monthly charge may not be a drastic change, but he expects big changes from the company.

“I would like to see them take care of their customers, and take care of their infrastructure,” said Tabor.

The commission was originally met with 138 letters of protest on record against the rate increase.

Tabor was the only citizen out of the two that attended, who came forward on the bench. With no other public comments, the hearing closed and the proposal will move through the next course of action.

The final order deadline is June 24th, 2024.
