Two people died when their small private plane crashed in a field near Herlong Recreational Airport on Jacksonville's Westside.

The single-engine Mooney M20J went down after departing from Herlong about 11:30 a.m., the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed.

The names of the victims — who were the only ones on board — weren't released.

The aircraft had been in the air about 20 minutes Sunday before crashing. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating with assistance from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

A Mooney M20J is a four-seat, propeller-driven fixed-wing aircraft, according to the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.
