Small earthquake hits western NC Thursday morning

BRYSON CITY, N.C. (WNCN) — A small earthquake was reported in western North Carolina early Thursday morning.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the 2.1 magnitude quake hit around 3 a.m. on Thursday, April 4 and had a depth of 4 kilometers.

2 earthquakes rattle NC areas less than an hour apart

This earthquake was the seventh in North Carolina this year, and the second in Bryson City in just a few weeks.

The location of the quake is reportedly near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It’s 10.9 miles of Bryson City, North Carolina and 27.1 miles of Sevierville, Tennessee.

This comes after two small earthquakes rattled parts of western NC on Saturday night in Surry County about 20 miles of Mount Airy, NC. Both were 2.3 & 1.5 magnitude quakes.

The strongest earthquake to happen in North Carolina was back in 1916 in Sparta when a 5.1 magnitude quake hit the area.
