How slot machines helped fund one Missouri student’s college tuition

COLUMBIA, Mo. – One Mizzou student from St. Louis is utilizing TikTok and his passion for slot machines to craft a series on the social media platform, not only to inform but also to fund his college tuition.

Andrew Labit is recognized as an internet personality with a quick Google search, but to those who know him personally, he embodies much more.

Despite leading a bustling life, juggling his pursuit of a master’s degree in meteorology and his role as a teacher’s assistant, Labit finds time to share content about his slot machine series.

“I have a hobby of collecting old antique coins, like silver coins, and that kind of goes hand in hand [with the slot machines]. But primarily what I do is I just kind of showcase the slot machines, how they work, spinning to try and get the jackpot, which is one of my most popular series. And I just kind of do whatever the audience wants me to do, and I find a way to make it entertaining.”

Labit commenced his slot machine series in July 2021, and three years on, he continues to produce content centered around these vintage machines.

His collection includes a 25-cent slot machine, a cherished family heirloom passed down from his great grandfather to his grandfather, and eventually to him, as well as a 5-cent slot machine, currently featured in his content and destined for sale.

“The 25-cent machine was from my grandpa, my great grandpa. Originally owned it in a pub and grill down in Pacific, Missouri,” he said.

Among the educational content Labit shares are videos explaining the inner workings of antique slot machines, his attempts to secure the jackpot, and endeavors to win the ‘invisible jackpot’ on the 25-cent machine—all of which have garnered significant views, attracting a dedicated following that has enabled him to financially support his college education.

For his undergraduate degree, Labit accrued close to $20,000 in expenses, which he successfully covered through earnings from his social media avenues.

Completing his undergraduate studies in three years, he also served as a resident assistant, which waived his food and housing expenses, and he is currently a teaching assistant, which waives tuition for his masters degree.

While Labit contemplates branching out from his slot machine content, he remains known as the “slot machine guy” on the internet. Presently, he sets his sights on hitting the jackpot on the nickel machine.

“After that, I’m thinking about doing something like slot machine war series.” His thought process was having videos where viewers choose a team and vote on who is going to ‘win’.

Labit said he primarily makes content for TikTok but then cross posts it to other social media such as YouTube and Instagram.
