SLO County teenager stabbed in altercation over allegedly stolen bike, police say

An Atascadero man was arrested after police say he stabbed a teenager over an allegedly stolen bike on Monday morning.

Atascadero police officers arrived at the 6700 block of El Camino Real around 11:25 a.m. When they arrived, they found a 16-year-old boy “suffering from a laceration to his left forearm.”

Police say preliminary investigations show an altercation occurred between the teenager and 39-year-old Markus Hales over the bike.

During the confrontation, Hales allegedly stabbed the teenager in the forearm, causing a non-life-threatening injury.

Hales was not at the scene at the time officers arrived, police said.

The teenager was treated by Atascadero Fire and Emergency Services before his parent transported him to a nearby hospital for medical care.

Officers located Hales in the 5700 block of El Camino Real and transported him to San Luis Obispo County Jail. He is being held on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

Hales was no longer in jail custody as of 2:30 p.m., the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office inmate database showed.

The Atascadero Police Department asks anyone with information to call 805-461-5051.
