The Salt Lake City Police Department said Miller Bin, 56, allegedly shot and killed Hay Ly, 61, before dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the parking lot of the company’s property.

The shooting happened on Sunday afternoon, March 3, around 2:30 p.m. at Varex Imaging in the 1600 block of South Pioneer Road. SLCPD said they responded to the scene after getting calls about “a man with a gun” at the business.

Detectives said Bin was an employee of the business and a firearm was allegedly found near his body. There were reportedly no other victims. Detectives are still working to determine a motive behind the shooting.

“Workplace violence can include physical, verbal and psychological abuse,” said SLCPD in a press release. “The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health defines workplace violence as ‘an act or threat of violence on a spectrum that ranges from verbal abuse to physical and even lethal assault towards persons at work or on duty.'”

Police say Varex Imaging is cooperating with detectives in the investigation. SLCPD spokesperson Brent Weisberg said the department has not had a workplace homicide in recent years.

The company released a statement following the incident sharing its “condolences and heartfelt support” with the families.

“It is with deep and profound sadness I inform you that there was a shooting at our Salt Lake City site yesterday, and two Varex employees passed away.  While we know that the shooter is deceased, we cannot share any additional information about the incident at this time. Salt Lake Police department may be able to share more information with you about the incident.  Our condolences and heartfelt support are with the impacted families.”
