Skull found near Banff confirmed as human

The RCMP's special tactical operations team has finished searching an area near Banff where hikers discovered a human skull.

A skull found by two hikers at the base of Cascade Mountain near Banff, Alta., has been confirmed as human.

Officials say an investigation is now underway to identify the person and the cause of death.

RCMP found other bones in the same area after an intensive search.

The search area spanned one square kilometre on the south side of the Trans-Canada Highway between the two exits into Banff.

The remains have been sent to the medical examiner's office to determine if they are related to the skull.

However, RCMP say a report from the medical examiner may take some time to be completed.
