Skiers to attach TV camera to goggles at worlds

TV viewers to enjoy skiers' perspective at worlds thanks to cameras attached to goggles

SCHLADMING, Austria (AP) -- When Marcel Hirscher clears the gates during a slalom run at the skiing world championships, TV viewers will be right there with him.

Austrian broadcaster ORF on Thursday announced the use of mini-cameras with transmitters, which will be attached to the strap of the goggles racers wear during the slalom and giant slalom.

It's the first time in ski racing that pictures from an athlete's perspective will be integrated into the regular live broadcast.

ORF director Fritz Melcher says "these pictures will add new excitement to watching ski racing. For instance, we can now use pictures from an athlete at the start gate where other cameras have no access."

Racers are free to decide whether they want to wear the camera during their run.
