Ski Snowmass: resort guide

Snowmass is a modern resort close to popular Aspen
Snowmass is a modern resort close to popular Aspen

The slopes of Snowmass are a key part of the attraction of nearby Aspen as a destination. The skiing here is great for all standards. As a base, Snowmass has obvious appeal for families wanting easy cruising on their doorstep; but the resort is still a long way from being an entertaining place to stay.

Snowmass is a modern, purpose-built resort, with low-rise buildings set next to the gentle home slope. Within these buildings is Snowmass Village Mall. A little way down the hill (with a linking gondola) is the recently added Base Village, development of which has been slowed by the recession.

We like

Varied mountain, with the biggest vertical in the US – 1,340m
Aspen accessible by free bus
Uncrowded slopes
Lots of slope-side lodgings

We don't like

Limited dining, shopping and nightlife options
Diversions of Aspen town are a bus ride away

Village charm

Base Village has added a bit of style to what is a rather functional modern resort.

Convenience

Much of the lodging is ski-in/ski-out, and Snowmass Village Mall has a small cluster of shops and restaurants. Efficient free bus services (crowded at times) link Snowmass with Aspen’s mountains and town – the latter until late at night.

Scenery

The views from the high-points are long but not dramatic.
