Six men shot, one dead, at Broad Ripple bar

A shooting at a Broad Ripple bar early Saturday morning left one man dead and five others injured, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Officers in the area responded to Landsharks, 808 Broad Ripple Ave., upon hearing gunshots just after 1 a.m. They found five injured men, one of whom later died after being taken to a local hospital.

A sixth gunshot victim drove himself to the hospital, and investigators determined the man had also been injured at the bar.

In a social media statement Saturday morning, IMPD Chief Chris Bailey said he was "deeply disturbed by the tragic incident early this morning that resulted in one life lost and others injured."

Bailey said detectives are actively investigating the shooting.

The Broad Ripple Village Association called the violence "reprehensible" in a statement Saturday.

"While the BRVA does not have the authority to regulate establishments, we are committed to continue working with business owners in the village to help support a safe environment for our residents and visitors and will do everything within our power to advocate for those responsible to be held accountable," the statement read.

The statement said that "the majority of the bars in the village have put recommended safety procedures in place."

Reached over the phone by IndyStar, BRVA Executive Director Jordan Dillon said several bars in the area use metal detecting wands at their doors. She said she did not know what safety procedures were in place at Landsharks.

Councilor John Barth, the Indianapolis Democrat who represents the Broad Ripple area in the Indianapolis City-County Council, told IndyStar he has worked with IMPD and BRVA for several years to improve safety in the area. IMPD now uses license-plate readers in the area and has approved overtime for officers to be present on weekend nights. Businesses have installed exterior cameras and limit operating hours when necessarily. But all of these measures can only go so far, Barth said.

"The preponderance of guns and availability of guns is a monumental problem," Barth said. "It turns grievances that would otherwise be solved physically or verbally into deadly consequences."

Police are still searching for suspects. Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Detective Steven Gray at 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
