‘The situation is really dire’: Venice nonprofit delivers much-needed supplies to Haiti

VENICE, Fla. (WFLA) – Agape, a nonprofit based in Venice, is delivering aid to Haiti. A flight departed Friday morning with food, medical equipment and other necessities.

“Things are just terrible, there’s no power being generated in most of the country, there’s no food distribution since the main port at Port Au Prince is closed, there’s nothing coming into the country. They don’t produce a lot in Haiti, so, the situation is really dire,” describes Tim Kenny, director of donor relations and development.

He says gangs have been blocking airports, preventing the faith-based organization from dropping off supplies for three weeks. “First aid supplies is a big thing right now. People are injured from the fighting and just from what it takes to pick up and move halfway across the country in a hurry,” Kenny said.

Leaders with the organization admit the trips can be dangerous for volunteers but say it’s their mission to provide aid.

“There are 12 million people in Haiti and they just want what we want. They want safety for their families. They want to be able to get medical treatment. They want to be able to have a good meal once or twice a day,” Kenny said.

Volunteers on the flight departed at 7 a.m. Friday and are expected to return to Venice by 8 p.m. Friday. Kenny says the group will make another trip to Haiti with additional supplies next week.
