Sirens and announcements part of NNSY training; no actual threat

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – The sounds of alarms and announcements coming from Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) in Portsmouth between March 1 and March 6 are part of scheduled training exercises.

According to the shipyard, these are regularly scheduled security and emergency response training exercises and “are not in response to any specific threat.”

As part of the training, the shipyard is using its public address loudspeaker, referred to as “The Giant Voice.”

WAVY received quite a number of calls to our newsroom from concerned residents who heard the activity and were unaware it was part of the training.

The public may also see security and emergency response personnel responding to these exercises. Again, this is all part of training, which is expected to conclude on Wednesday, March 6.
