Sir John Reveals All the Makeup He Used for Beyoncé's Now-Iconic Vogue Cover

On Monday, Beyoncé's cover for the September issue of Vogue dropped, and the Internet has not been able to stop talking about it since. From Beyoncé's creative direction to the talents of 23-year-old photographer Tyler Mitchell (the first black photographer to shoot a Vogue cover) to Beyoncé's candid first-person essay (as told to writer Clover Hope), there are several elements that make this an unforgettable cover. Least of all, Beyoncé's stunning no-makeup makeup look, snapped during golden hour.

It's all thanks to her makeup artist Sir John, who broke down exactly how to get that glow. “Beyoncé loves a ‘no-makeup’ makeup look,” he said in a press release. “She’s all about being confident in your skin and owning your natural element. This look was all about redefining glamorous as a state of mind. We focused on enhancing her natural brows, skin, and structure — and bringing out that inner glow. Sir John explained that he started off by prepping Queen Bey's skin with Marc Jacobs's Beauty's Under(cover) Perfecting Coconut Face Primer. Then, he used a two-part step to get that precise "bronzey, rose-gold finish": First up, Marc Jacobs Beauty's Dew Drops Coconut Gel Highlighter in Fantasy, which he put on the "basic highpoints" of her face. His helpful tip? "Always avoid shimmer on the front of the face. Apply it to your angles for sexiness." After that, he mixed Marc Jacobs Beauty's Dew Drops Coconut Gel Highlighter in Fantasy with foundation slightly darker than her face for a "3D cheek." “It’s all about a glowy contour. Dew Drops are worth their weight in gold. It’s the one thing I have in my bag everywhere — I use it for concerts, for shoots, for tours — I use it religiously," he said. Finally, Sir John topped off his gorgeous creation with Marc Jacobs Beauty's Finish-Line Perfecting Coconut Setting Powder.

And that, ladies and gents, is how you get a Vogue-cover worthy Beyoncé level highlight.
