Sinkhole opens up on White House lawn after days of heavy rain, storms

A sinkhole opened up on the White House's North Lawn, near the press briefing room, early this week and has been roped off with orange cones and yellow caution tape.

The sinkhole has been growing according to reporters, CBS News said.

A stretch of soggy weather around Washington, D.C., can't be ruled out as the culprit, and more rain is on the way.

"Counting [Tuesday], D.C. has had measurable rainfall nine of the past 11 days," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Bob Larson said.

"The total during this period, as of Tuesday night, has been 7.37 inches, which is way over the average rainfall for the entire month," Larson added. The normal rainfall for Washington, D.C., in May is 3.99 inches.

Some sinkholes can be induced by human activity, while others can be caused by extreme weather, including heavy rain.

Dry weather is expected in the nation's capital through the balance of the week and into the first part of the Memorial Day weekend.

Thunderstorms may bring more rain to the region on Saturday night and Sunday, Larson said.
