The City of Windsor says a downtown intersection will be closed until at least Tuesday morning because of a large sinkhole.

In a statement issued on Monday evening, the municipality said the University Avenue West and Church Street intersection has been safely cordoned off.

The hole remains under assessment. The road closure will be in place until at least 9 a.m. Tuesday, the city said.

Photos taken by CBC show buckling in the pavement around the hole, which measures at least two metres across.

Police vehicles were visible in the area around 5:30 p.m. Monday, but firefighting vehicles and Essex-Windsor EMS were not on the scene at that time.

Windsor Fire and Rescue Services say the sinkhole is being handled by police.

Windsor police had no additional information to share as of 6 p.m. Monday.
