Singing Like Adele; S--- Dowager Countesses and Mixologists Say

We realize there's only so much time one can spend in a day watching new trailers, viral video clips, and shaky cell phone footage of people arguing on live television. This is why every day The Atlantic Wire highlights the videos that truly earn your five minutes (or less) of attention. Today: What Al Franken and Norm Macdonald thought of Mitt Romney 18 years ago, proof that it's easy to sing like Adele, and a tennis temper tantrum for the ages at the Australian Open.

18 years ago, Al Franken and Norm Macdonald did a Weekend Update desk piece about Mitt Romney's campaign for the senate. Today, Franken's a senator, Romney is about to become the Republican presidential nominee, and Macdonald has retroactively become one of the ten most indispensable cast members in SNL history. Only one of these things seemed completely outside the realm of possibility in 1994. [BuzzFeed via Andrew Kaczynski via Joe Hagan]

We have thoughts after watching the 70-person mashup of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep." First: there sure are lots of people who can sing like Adele. Exactly like Adele, in fact. Also, we look forward to the Martin Scorsese picture in the near-future that makes devastating and effective use of "Rolling in the Deep," possibly during a montage where a criminal empire is rising/falling or people are placing bets at a racetrack.  [Zapatou via Vulture]

Just when we thought we were out, these "Shit Girls Say' parodies pull us back in. Actually, this is the rare meme that we're enjoying more in the latter stages than we did early on, when all the jokes were about race and class and made us vaguely uncomfortable. Now the meme has moved on to mocking all the silly things that mixologists say (No. 1: "I'm a mixologist!") and every single thing Maggie Smith's Dowager Countess character from Downton Abbey does. This meme is growing up and growing on us.  [FamousBag and Jagger95]

We're happy there's a new Santigold album on the horizon, but we question the wisdom of the very buzzy, very Brooklyn singer-songwriter taking potshots at Katy Perry and Lady Gaga in the otherwise frenetic and strong video for the single "Big Mouth." Admittedly, they're easy, readily identifiable targets, but are these the people she thinks need to be taken down a peg. It's easy money and all for fun, but considering the warm reception for her 2008 debut album, we thought she's be hunting bigger game. The song is pretty terrific, though.  [Ibelieveinsantogold]

The early rounds of the Australian Open are usually good for one racket-smashing tantrum, which Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus provided during a second-round loss to Stanislas Wawrinka, breaking four of his own rackets before the start of third set. It should be noted that he did manage to win the third set, so maybe he was on to something. Alas, he didn't break any valuable tennis equipment before the fourth and final set, which he lost 6-1. [ESPN]
